Playground honors the special life of Christina-Taylor Green

On Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, it was my privilege to attend an event honoring the life and spirit of Christina-Taylor Green. She was the youngest victim of the tragic and senseless shootings that occurred in Tucson on January 8th of this year that claimed the lives of six people and wounded 14 others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
Christina-Taylor Green, who was born on 9/11, was just 9 years old at the time of her death.
The event honoring this special child was the dedication of the new Christina-Taylor Green Playground at the Mesa Verde Elementary School. It was a beautiful, picture-perfect day and about 200 people were on hand to attend the dedication.
John Green, Christina’s father, spoke of her being an inspiration to others. Remarks were also provided by Jim Martin of Gov. Jan Brewer’s office; Ron Barber of Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s office; and staff from the office of Congressman Paul Gosar, who represents Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.
Those in attendance included many of the first responders to the Jan. 8th shooting.
Many volunteers and corporate donors helped make the tribute to Christina-Taylor Green possible. Companies such as Allstate Insurance, Sundt Construction and Little Tikes Commercial Play Systems gave their time and resources to build the playground.
This lasting and fitting tribute to Christina-Taylor Green will be part of our community for many years to come. It will be a positive affirmation that exemplifies what a special young lady she was. Her spirit continues to live on and inspire.
